The Web Of Love In Gone With The Wind
The web of love in Gone with the Wind is interesting and intriguing. In this movie love is definitely not normal but a game of cat and mouse. For instance, Scarlett O-Hara sets her heart on Ashley Wilkes and feels that he-s the only man for her; however, once she finds out that he is devoted to his wife Melanie Hamilton, she lets him go”at least for awhile. Meanwhile she finds love”at least a kind of love that can provide her with wealth and position”with Rhett Butler.
Rhett Butler comes off as a ladies man but underneath his rascal ways, he has a soft heart for his daughter and in helping those who truly need help. Rhett Butler is charming, attractive and is not afraid of showing affection to the ladies. He is not sexually suppressed buy thumbs his nose at those who are repressed sexually.
Then there is Melanie Hamilton. She is devoted to her husband Ashley Wilkes and is not aware of Scarlett-s love for him”at least not until toward the end of the movie. She doesn-t care much for Rhett Butler; however, later she sees that underneath his rascalion ways, he is loyal to his family and to those who call him friend. Melanie, even though she appears to be frail, is very strong in her determination to survive and hold her family close.
Ashley Wilkes comes across as a weak man but devoted to Melanie. He is definitely attracted to Scarlett and for awhile succumbs to her advances and beauty; however, in the end he is loyal to Melanie and is crushed when she dies.
So, indeed there is a web of love in “Gone with the Wind.” It is Scarlett who weaves this web of deception, lies and lust and at the end of the movie she is all alone but still scheming on how to get Rhett back.
